Coffee Liqueur

Making a homemade version of Kahlua or Tia Maria is surprisingly easy. For a simple coffee liqueur recipe, all you need is a base liquor, instant coffee, a vanilla bean, sugar, and water. It’s a fun project and you’ll find that it’s less expensive than the store-bought coffee liqueurs.

Ingredients:

  • 700ml Rum
  • 8 tsp coffee granules
  • 250g Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 Vanilla Pod

Slow Method:

  1. Add the coffee and vanilla pod into to a 1l Kilner Jar.
  2. Add the sugar and Rum.
  3. Put into a cool dark place and leave for 3 weeks.
  4. Shake the jar every day until the sugar has dissolved
  5. Strain into a clean bottle and test for taste. Add extra sugar if needed.
  6. Enjoy your Coffee Liqueur,

Fast Method:

  1. Add the coffee and vanilla pod into to a 1l Kilner Jar.
  2. Add the sugar and Rum.
  3. Put into a water bath at 65°C for 3 hours.
  4. Strain into a clean bottle and test for taste. Add extra sugar if needed.
  5. Enjoy your Coffee Liqueur.

Mark’s Top Tip: Rum or Vodka are commonly used to make coffee liqueur but there is no reason not to try any other alcohol.
